juno re-film

We refilmed the opening scene of juno in order to gain some experience in filming and got some knowledge of the editing software and how it works, it also gave us an idea of what sort of things that can go wrong with the filming and editing process and what we can do to get around this. The filming of juno did help us to realise the importance of planning and keeping to a storyboard and it also got us to think about transitions between clips because the original juno had a lot of different transitions that required us to think of how we were going to fit the film together even whilst we were filming.

preliminary

This is our groups final preliminary which includes a mid-shot and a long-shot, match on action and the 180 degree rule during some dialogue. We made our preliminary quite action packed in order to make it more of a challenge and gave us more of a chance to incorporate more editing and filming techniques that could give us more experience for our final movie clip, for example the slap wasn't real and so we filmed it from further away to hide this and created a well timed clapping sound to make it look as real as we could. We filmed each scene a number of times to make sure that we had enough footage to edit with, it also gave us the ability to put a few of them together to make the scene smoother which proved useful when it came to editing.

influencing movies

influencing movies and styles
We quite like the style of Quentin Tarantino and have recognised a few of his movies as influencing.
Pulp fiction is a dark crime film which is stylish and modern yet retro; it is often referred to as a neo-noir by critics. There are a number of stories that occur within the film which are shown in a random order which makes the audience question certain which are then explained later when the characters involved stories are shown. The film is based around gangsters and organised crime as the character that links the characters and their stories together is a gangster boss called Marsellus. The film is known for its use of extensive dialogue and element of humour in a dark situation.
This dark gangster influence is what we are looking to include in our own movie, we would also like to capture the sense of modern retro style which is in pulp fiction, we also like the idea of having a number of different characters that are linked
Another movie is Kill Bill which has the same sort of modern retro style and also. In the opening 2 minutes of the movie it is shot in black and white and shows the main character bloodied as she has taken a beating. This is quite similar to our idea as we have thought about using black and white in our own opening scene, we also want the opening scene to involve violence of a gang nature which makes this scene in particular quite useful as a source of inspiration.
Another film that is quite influential is the film reservoir dog that is another dark gangster movie that the same retro feel that we’d like to incorporate into our movie it is also about crime and stylish violence which is very much what we are going for in our own movie.

media analysis

media analysis of comedy
The comedy I’ve chosen to analyse is anchorman which is a comedy about a famous news reader called Ron Burgundy who is loved by everyone. It is set in the 1970’s and he has all of the views of an average man in that time which includes the quite fascist views, which is the main funny point of the film as he deals with the first female news anchor working with him and his rigid views.
The first two minutes is an establishing shot that cranes into the home state of the main character Ron. whilst the camera cranes in there is a narration that gives us an idea of what sort of person Ron is and how the rest of the movie will follow, this narration is like a typical 70’s one and is made to sound like this. It then cuts to a collection of shots of Ron just talking to his colleges and practicing in front of the camera. This also shows us how he is and what type of person he is which will let you get to know his character a little bit better. It is also an excuse to show the audience the theme of the movie and also helps to show that it is set in the 70’s with the fashion of the people and the look of the set. The camera angles are all just straight on at the main character which suggests simplicity which is the idea of the movie, also as it is a comedy it doesn’t really require many creative camera views, and doesn’t really have a lot of varying editing transitions other than jump shots.
